Foodbank Heroes

Foodbank Heroes

Partnership with our local community is one of our core values at The earls High School, and one that students readily engage with, raising huge amounts of money for local charities.

Recently, the students and staff have donated 1500 items of food to the Halesowen Foodbank. The largest donation was made by form 8A2, who donated a staggering 236 items. We feel incredibly of the whole school community for their efforts and generosity.

House competition: Y7 pupil creates a winning formula for a Bond villain

House competition: Y7 pupil creates a winning formula for a Bond villain

To celebrate the long-awaited release of the new OO7 film ‘No Time to Die’, the English faculty gave Earls’ pupils the mission to design a new Bond villain.Ìý All entries had the chance to win a pair of cinema tickets kindly donated by The Reel in Quinton.

The judges were ‘shaken not stirred’ by the number of excellent entries received but the prize for the most creative and intricate character profile had to go to Dominic. Congratulations Dominic and well done for everyone who entered and achieved a point for their respective House. You can read his winning entry here:

COP26 Roundtable with James Morris MP

COP26 Roundtable with James Morris MP

In September, James Morris, our local MP launched a competition for 14-18 year old students in local schools. With the COP 26 environmental summit on the horizon, James asked local students to reflect on their vision for a low carbon future. With the support of the Geography Department, 60 year 10 and 11 students submitted an entry.

Davina, in year 11, submitted a letter setting out what she and her family do personally to help the environment and her hopes for the outcome of the COP 26 summit. Her submission really impressed the judges and as a result, she was invited to attend a round table meeting with local business and government representatives, hosted by James. We are proud that Davina was able to pass on her views and represent the young people of Halesowen at this important meeting.

A big thank you to all students who entered the competition and in particular Mya-Rose, Leoni, Charlie and Shennel,Ìýwho were all short listed.

This is such a fantastic achievement for all our students involved!

Poetry Competition

As part of the School’s House Competition, the English department ran a Poetry Competition for all students. This event coincided with National Poetry Day and students were asked to create a poem around the theme of ‘Choice’.

We were so excited to receive so many creative and well written entries from all year groups. Choosing winners was a hard task but please see below the successful students for each year group:

Year 7: Bradley 7H1

Year 8: Harry 7H1

Year 9: Joshua 9S2, Harry 9C1, Phoebe 9C1

Year 10: Sian 10E, Lila 10K

Year 11: Greg 11K

Here’s a selection of their winning entries…..

Year 10 Blood Brothers Theatre Trip (3rd November 2021)

Year 10 Blood Brothers Theatre Trip (3rd November 2021)

During the first week back after October half term, Year 10 Drama students went to The Birmingham Hippodrome for their GCSE theatre trip to see Willy Russell’s ‘Blood Brothers’.Ìý They were particularly excited about getting back to the theatre, after COVID lockdowns prevented live performances from taking place.

The famous play is about twin brothers separated at birth and the different turns their lives take as they become friends, not knowing the truth, until it is tragically too late.Ìý GCSE students are studying the play for their written exam, which makes up 40% of their final grade.Ìý The show’s finale caused many teary eyes as usual and those who had insisted, they didn’t ‘do’ musicals, were won round – for the time being anyway!Ìý As usual, Mrs Grainger would like to congratulate students on their conduct, which was a credit to the school.

‘The Woman in Black’ GCSE Drama Trip

‘The Woman in Black’ GCSE Drama Trip

On Thursday 13th January, Year 11 Drama students travelled to Covent GardenÌýinÌýLondon to see Stephen Mallatratt’s ‘TheÌýWomanÌýinÌýBlack’. There was a mixture of emotions amongst the students: those who were excited at the prospect of the watching such a fantastic piece of West End theatre, and those who were terrified at the thought of the performance being as bone chilling as the reviews suggest!
The play is about Arthur Kipps, a young solicitor, who is sent to the funeral of a mysteriousÌýwomanÌýinÌýan isolated village.
GCSE students are studying the play for their written exam, which makes up 20% of their final grade.
The show’s clever use of sound effects, multifunctional props and lighting caused many jump scares, even if the students claimed they were not worried (as they hid behind their jumpers)!
As usual, Mrs Grainger and Mrs Cole would like to congratulate students on their conduct, which was a credit to the school. A truly wonderful experience was had by all!
